Buffalo Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes failed his incoming physical to training camp and will begin the year on the Non-Football Injury list. Hughes strained his calf between minicamp and training camp and was away from the facility, which is why it’s NF-I and not the PUP list.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane announced the information at his opening press conference. He didn’t seem too concerned that it would be a long-term injury.

Hughes has been notoriously available as a member of the team. He missed Week 17 last year after the Bills had clinched their spot in the playoffs. It’s the first game he has missed in eight years with Buffalo. At almost 32, he received the week off to get ready for the playoffs.

The pass rush was a focus of the offseason, with their top two draft picks used on defensive ends. In 2020, their top draft pick was a pass rusher, too.

Hughes is on the final year of his deal.
