The New York Jets have hired Matt Cavanaugh as a senior offensive assistant. Presumably he will be working closely with quarterback Zach Wilson, filling the hole in the staff created when quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp passed away last month.

This will be the second go around for Cavanaugh with the Jets. He served as the Jets’ quarterbacks coach under Rex Ryan from 2009 through 2012, assisting in the development of Mark Sanchez. The 64 year old Cavanaugh has some familiarity with the Jets’ current offensive concepts from his time as quarterbacks coach under Sean McVay with the Washington Football Team from 2015-2016.

Matt Cavanaugh has a long history in the NFL. He has served with seven different teams as offensive coordinator and as quarterbacks coach. Cavanaugh last coached in the NFL as a senior offensive assistant with the Washington Football Team in 2019. The Jets have been looking for a veteran presence to supplement their young coaching staff and a quarterbacks coach to replace Greg Knapp. Cavanaugh fits both bills.
