Some thought Jermaine Johnson would be a top 10 pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Some even thought the Jets could use the fourth overall selection on him. And yet, the Florida State edge rusher didn’t hear his name called until pick No. 26.

Gang Green ultimately scooped Johnson up after he fell, trading the 35th, 69th and 163rd picks to the Titans for the 26th and 101st picks. The Jets had been heavily linked to the prospect prior to the draft, and they even told Johnson they were going to go after him.

That ultimately proved true, netting New York what Draft Wire described as one of the biggest steals of the draft. Other nominees included Ravens S Kyle Hamilton (14th overall), Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd (27th) and Steelers WR George Pickens (52nd).

The Jets traded up for Johnson because they believe he can be a dominant, disruptive force in the trenches alongside Carl Lawson. Johnson broke out at FSU, tallying 11.5 sacks in 2021. That was his lone season with the Seminoles after two years at Georgia. Johnson also recorded 17.5 TFLs and 70 combined tackles last year.
