The Jets are indeed adding a veteran quarterback and it’s an old friend. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Jets are signing quarterback Trevor Siemian to their practice squad, pending a physical.

Siemian was with the Jets in 2019 and started one game for the team. The 31-year-old has been in the NFL since 2015 and has been with seven NFL teams, including his first stint with the Jets. He has also spent time with the Broncos, Vikings, Titans, Saints, Bears and most recently the Bengals this past offseason.

Siemian started in Week 2 of the 2019 season for the Jets against the Cleveland Browns when Sam Darnold had mononucleosis. An ankle injury — ultimately torn ligaments in his ankle, ending his season — took him out after just six pass attempts and he was replaced by Luke Falk during the game.

The former Northwestern quarterback started one game last season for the Chicago Bears…against the Jets. It was the classic battle of Siemian versus Mike White as Siemian started in place of an injured Justin Fields.

Siemian is 13-17 in 30 starts his career as a starter with 42 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He had 11 touchdowns and three interceptions in 2021 during four starts for the Saints.

Siemian returns as the Jets scramble to figure out a backup plan following another disastrous start from Zach Wilson, quickly ruining what was once a promising season following the Achilles injury for Aaron Rodgers. It may not be by much, but this is a bit of an eventual upgrade at the position and Wilson is, once again, on notice.
