Now-former Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon got to put ink to a new contract after arriving with the Houston Texans.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a three-year, $27 million contract extension
It’s a surprise from the Texans and boon for Mixon, who had one year left on his current contract at roughly $6 million and now gets three years with $13 million in full guarantees.
Cincinnati was on the verge of cutting Mixon before a roster bonus kicked in after signing Zack Moss in free agency before finding the surprise trade to the Texans (which gets them back a draft pick from Houston).
For his part, Mixon has sounded very surprised about the sudden change of scenery:
Joe Mixon said it was an ’emotional’ 24 to 48 hours when he was surprised and ‘hurt’ to be traded by #Bengals said he cherishes his time in Cincinnati and is happy to be in Houston and wants to make it ‘lit’ here as well @KPRC2 pic.twitter.com/VwPjtBsjF3

Still, a running back going on 28 years old getting this type of contract is a rarity, so Mixon’s emerged nicely from the trade with a contender, as an unquestioned full-time starter and with a nice new contract, too.
