Chargers edge defender Joey Bosa agreed to a 2024 restructure of his contract to remain with the team, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Khalil Mack’s restructure yesterday paved the way for the Chargers to be able to sign their free agent class of Gus Edwards, Alohi Gilman and Will Dissly. While we still don’t know the technical numbers for Mack’s 2024 cap hit, Bosa’s restructure will save the team $10.4 million more on top of their current cap this season.

Importantly, Bosa’s restructure also doesn’t affect the Chargers flexibility in 2025. Most restructures make it tougher to move on from players the next season by pushing money down the road. The Chargers net savings in 2025 from a cut of Bosa remain similar even with a restructure, roughly $18 million in the process.

Bosa and Mack will run it back for the third time as teammates in Los Angeles after intense speculation about both of their futures in this offseason cycle. However, it’s important to note that Bosa has now missed 20+ games in the last two seasons with various soft tissue and lower body injuries. Mack also isn’t getting younger himself at 33, despite playing all 34 games of the last two years.

Both Bosa and Mack returning gives the Chargers flexibility to fill out the rest of their defense in April’s draft as opposed to needing to fill a hole. Jesse Minter’s defense certainly requires pressure from their star pass rushers. Hopefully, LA’s two star pass rushers both have better health outcomes to be able to match the potential of their star billing.
