More heads roll as the Panthers confront their disappointing season

The Carolina Panthers have fired quarterbacks coach Josh McCown and running backs coach Duce Staley. The team website is framing these moves as interim head coach Chris Tabor “adjusting his coaching staff.”

The play of both the quarterback and the running backs this season left much to be desired, but if that was a metric for firing then the Panthers would have fired everybody except for the social media department.

It is unclear at this time if the Panthers are going to move in radically different directions in the passing or running game, but clearly the status quo has been determined as detrimental to the continued development of Bryce Young.

Both coaches are highly respected for their work and should have no trouble landing their next gigs in the NFL.

Staley played with both franchises in Pennsylvannia from 1997 to 2006 and then coached with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions from 2011 to 2022 before joining the Panthers.

McCown played quarterback for 12 different NFL teams between 2002 and 2020, including for the Panthers. This was his first year coaching in the NFL, despite having interviewed twice previously for a Houston Texans head coaching vacancy in 2021 and 2022.
