Kellen Moore: Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is no longer on a pitch count

It appears that Dak is all the way back.

Just about every day this week there has been some Dallas Cowboys news. On Monday the team added three players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Tuesday saw them waive a player to get down to a roster size of 80, and on Wednesday two more players were added to the list while two other members of the secondary sat out for other reasons, not to mention the fact that Rico Dowdle was placed on injured reserve.

Something else that took place on Wednesday was a little Mike McCarthy fib. He said during his press conference that quarterback Dak Prescott would up his workload and take place in 7-on-7 drills, but that wasn’t quite the case. Prescott actually took reps in team drills.

This certainly seemed like a significant step forward for the Cowboys considering that they are now two weeks away from their season opener against the world champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With that being the case, it seems as if things with Dak and the Cowboys aren’t only improved, they are just about back to normal. He is no longer on a pitch count.

Tuesday night’s episode of Hard Knocks saw Dak Prescott decline to even throw Ezekiel Elliott a pass in a warm-up sort of capacity. During the exchange where Dak declined Zeke he noted that he was on a pitch count. Being limited to a certain number of throws means that he can’t burn one of them while tossing a ball back and forth not during an actual repetition.

With the opener so close now it stands to reason that the Cowboys are beginning preparations for the regular season. This is obviously the part of the year that counts the most which is what the team was waiting for with regards to QB1. Now that real work has to be done they are ready to get him going fully.
