As practice began, the reason for his absence was unknown.
After three straight days of practicing in pads, the Kansas City Chiefs went back to “shells and shorts” for the ninth full practice of their training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.
Friday’s session was a 10-10-10 practice, in which the team cycles through 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays and 10 minutes of special teams. In the offensive portion, the defense acts as a scout team, giving the offense a chance to see how the plays will work in a best-case situation. Then the tables are turned in the defensive portion.
The Kansas City Star’s Herbie Teope reported the most notable absence: guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who has been working with the second team while rookie Trey Smith has been getting the bulk of the first-team reps at right guard.
As practice began, the reason for Duvernay-Tardif’s absence was unknown. After it concluded, the Chiefs said he has a hand injury.

Although he eventually joined his teammates, defensive end Alex Okafor missed another day of practice with a hamstring injury; he worked with trainers. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. remains on the NFL concussion protocol, while Antonio Callaway was out with a knee injury.
Following practice, the Chiefs said that Callaway’s injury is a bone bruise. Since he left Thursday’s practice on a cart, this is good news.
Offensive lineman Kyle Long and linebacker Malik Herring remain on the team’s injured lists.
