Most overrated players on the roster

Before we get into the positive standouts of the Jets’ Madden ratings, I would like to point out a few of the players on the team who I believe were rated a little too high.

A couple of young defensive backs stand out as overrated: Ashtyn Davis (75) and Blessuan Austin (74).

Davis started six games as a third-round rookie last season and showed some promise, but ultimately was no better than below-average. He has the same rating as Connor McGovern, who is a starting-quality veteran and has shown he is capable of putting together a full season of top 10 caliber play at his position (doing so in 2019 with the Broncos).

Austin was bad last season. He earned a coverage grade of 47.4 at Pro Football Focus, ranking at the 18th percentile among qualified cornerbacks. A rating of 74 is much too high for a backup-quality player.

Jabari Zuniga is also rated too high with a score of 70. Zuniga did, quite literally, almost nothing in his rookie season. Over 8 games (103 snaps), Zuniga had one pressure, one run stop, one missed tackle, and one penalty. At best, he should be in the high 60s until he showcases development.

Most underrated players on the roster

Carl Lawson should be rated higher. With an 83 overall rating, he is ranked as the 10th-best right defensive end despite having the most pressures off the right side of any player in the NFL last year (63). He is ranked behind 35-year-old Calais Campbell (90) and 34-year-old Ndamukong Suh (85), which is clearly just a product of name recognition rather than actual present-day talent.

John Franklin-Myers is similarly underrated compared to players on his side of the line. Listed by Madden as a left defensive end, Franklin-Myers ranked 18th at his position with a 77 overall rating. However, in 2020, Franklin-Myers ranked eighth among all players in pressures off the left side (49) and sixth in pressure rate off the left side (16.3%). He ranked second and first in those categories, respectively, among interior defensive linemen.

Jets X-Factor Membership

I think George Fant (69) is rated a tad too low. He has consistently graded out as a bottom-half starter, so I won’t complain too much, but a 71 or 72 would be more accurate for him. With an overall rating of 69, he is rated below players like Zuniga (70) and Chris Herndon (70). That’s a rating reserved for backup-quality players, and I think Fant is above that level.

Some might see Mekhi Becton‘s rating (82) as too low, but I actually think it is fair for now. Becton is rated as the 11th-best left tackle. That is about where he ranked at his position over the second half of the 2020 season, so it is a fair ranking until his exciting ceiling grows from a projection to a reality.

Once Becton establishes himself as a true superstar on the field, the powers that be at EA Sports will surely give him a deserved ratings boost.
