With two days left until the deadline to sign a long-term contract, it appears the NY Jets and Marcus Maye will not reach an agreement.

The NFL’s deadline for teams to reach a long-term agreement with players on the franchise tag is July 15.

With two days to go, it appears that the New York Jets and Marcus Maye are far apart in contract discussions and thus unlikely to strike a deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport notes that the Jets did not respond to the last proposal made by Maye’s team, and that the offer made by Maye’s team has been pulled off the table. No deal is expected to be made by the tag extension deadline.

Following his initial tweet, Rapoport added more details.

Rapoport notes that the Jets offered Maye a deal with an average annual value that was approximately 20% below the 2021 franchise-tag amount for safeties, which is worth $10.6 million. That would put the Jets’ offer at around $8-9 million per year. This all occurred weeks ago, according to Rapoport.

Maye and his team turned down the offer. Rapoport notes that Maye would have received significantly more money both in terms of average annual value and total guarantees from multiple other teams on the free agent market.

Entering his fifth NFL season at 28 years old, Maye is coming off of a 2020 season in which he ranked as the NFL’s fourth-best safety at Pro Football Focus with an 82.9 overall grade.

Maye showcased the versatility to effectively play both free safety and strong safety while enjoying the best playmaking season of his career, logging 11 passes defended, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two sacks. He remained durable and consistent, missing only three defensive plays throughout the entire season.

In June, Maye reported to Florham Park for the Jets’ mandatory minicamp.
