Open thread: How does Stafford’s new receiving corps compared to his previous weapons?

Expectations are very high for the Rams passing game this season.

The past few months could be described as “The offseason of Matthew Stafford.” It started soon after the conclusion of the season when it became more and more clear that the Detroit Lions were willing to move their franchise quarterback. Debate raged on about how valuable he would be considered, but the Rams proved that they believe he is worth paying up for.

Since then, analysts and reporters across the league are quickly falling in love with the veteran. Now that Stafford is out of the black hole of Detroit and gets to partner with the genius Sean McVay, the sky is the limit—or that is at least how things are being portrayed. This could very well turn into reality, but a quarterback’s success is rarely decided by himself alone.

How does Matthew Stafford’s new receiving corps compare to his previous weapons?

My answer: Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods are both very solid receivers who have put up excellent numbers in Los Angeles. Both players are good for around 1,000 yards a season with a handful of touchdowns, and there is no secret as to why many are excited to see what they can do with a quarterback like Stafford.

However, I have a hard time seeing how this duo is much better than Calvin Johnson-Golden Tate, or Tate-Marvin Jones, or Jones-Kenny Golladay. I do think their numbers will jump up moving from Jared Goff to Stafford, but I would not expect Stafford to necessarily be a ton better off in terms of actual pass catchers. The coaching may be improved, and he might finally get some run game support, but I would take the weapons he had in Detroit over his new teammates.
