HC Sean McVay thinks his signal caller “will be ok”
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered an injury to his surgically-repaired throwing hand during a training camp practice on Monday evening. The severity of the injury is not yet known, but Sean McVay offered a tick of optimism in his remarks after practice, saying that he does think Stafford will be “OK” per Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
Rams QB Matthew Stafford hit his surgically-repaired thumb on a helmet near the end of practice and got it taped by Reggie Scott; did not resume throwing. Was gripping a cold towel and his helmet well. Sean McVay said he has no information yet. Says he does think he will be OK.

In recent years, the Rams have been one of the more fortunate teams in regards to injuries to key players, but LA may be running out of luck. Over the course of two weeks the team has lost workhorse running back Cam Akers for the season, and rookies Bobby Brown and Robert Rochelle are both expected to undergo surgery. Promising rookie tight-end Jacob Harris has also been working his way back from a core injury.

Former Rams quarterback Jared Goff suffered an injury in a similar manner last season during the Week 16 contest against the Seattle Seahawks. Goff ultimately missed one regular season game, but was available to play in both the wildcard and divisional rounds of the playoffs. Backup John Wolford started the wild card contest against Seattle, but it’s debatable whether this was the result of injury or McVay making a stylistic switch under center.

Wolford lead the squad to victory against the division rival Arizona Cardinals in Week 17, securing a playoff berth for Los Angeles. The Rams open the season September 12th against the Chicago Bears, which potentially gives Stafford over a month to recover. Wolford should be considered a capable spot starter should Stafford’s injury become serious.
