Melvin Gordon ‘can’t wait until training camp’

RB veteran Melvin Gordon III is excited to be back on the field, and he’s expecting hard work from everyone in the 2021 offseason

Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon III met with the press to talk about his expectations for the 2021 season and their team, including the running back and quarterback positions.

The running back felt good to be with his teammates again for the offseason. “No matter what you do in training, you can’t simulate being on the field,” he said, “making those cuts and just being around the guys in general.”

Put simply, and in his own words, Gordon doesn’t want his team “in the same situation as last year.” He really emphasized this when the press asked if he weighed less coming into minicamp this year compared to previous years.

“I grind. That’s what I do,” he stated, “I’ve prided myself on that since I was at Wisconsin, and I’m going to continue to work hard as if I’m a free agent.”

“I think people assume that just because I wasn’t here that I haven’t been getting (work) in. I have my little plan and the people that I work with that are kind of really getting me ready for the season. I’ll be ready along with the rest of our crew this year.”

On his impression of QB Teddy Bridgewater and the competition between him and Drew Lock, Gordon thinks organized team activities and minicamps won’t be as indicative of who will start as training camp will be.

“It’s called moving day as far as how you do things—scrimmages or whatever,” he explained, “Only then can I kind of give you a good gist of what’s up.”

Gordon added that they’re both hungry and they’re both out there making plays. “At the end of the day, we’ll see. You can only put in one quarterback, so eventually we’ll see who’s the starter.”

Despite his own excitement to be back on the field, when asked if he’s confident that he’ll remain the leader of his position, Gordon made one thing clear: he’s just trying to help the team win football games.

“The media is making it Javonte versus Melvin. Who’s going to start? This and that,” he said, “It’s not really about that. It’s about us winning football games [and it’s] about us competing.”

He continued, “I’m going to go out here and do what I need to do as a back. I’m going to go out here and give my everything to this team because that’s what this team deserves. [We’re] trying to put the Broncos on the map and keep us on the map.”

Gordon said that since they’ve been losing and had a losing season last year, he understands why the running backs are being asked those questions; but he’s focused on doing his job and he’s more worried about the team making waves this season than he is about who starts.

Actually, he’s looking forward to this lineup of running backs, and the healthy competition among them. Gordon said both Javonte Williams and Mike Boone have really good feet and hands for the position. “We’re definitely going to come out here and compete,” he said, “I can’t wait until training camp with guys flying around.”

“We’re going to grow as a group, and we’re looking to be the best running back group in the league.”
