Ex-Jets special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind.

His press conferences were routinely entertaining, with blunt remarks being made every time he took the podium. Westhoff’s willingness to tell a story how he saw it shows in his new book, “Figure It Out: My Thirty-Two Year Journey While Revolutionizing Pro Football’s Special Teams.” The book not only provides fans with a look at the NFL through the lens of one of the longest-tenured special teams coaches ever, but also some interesting takes on numerous Jets coaches and players.

Two of the players who drew remarks from Westhoff were Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. Westhoff didn’t hold back on either quarterback and specifically expressed his astonishment that Mike Tannenbaum signed Sanchez to a contract extension in 2012. According to Westhoff, Tannenbaum told him Sanchez was paid what he felt the passer that took the Jets to a pair of AFC title games deserved.

“I told him that I would agree with that if he had anything to do with us getting into that game,” Westhoff wrote, per NJ.com. “Mark is a great kid, but he was only a manageable quarterback at best.”

Westhoff’s thoughts on Tebow as a person were positive, but his review of him as a quarterback wasn’t glowing. Westhoff didn’t care for the way the Jets handled him, either, as he was left to use Tebow as a personal protector on punts. Westhoff also used Tebow on a handful of fake punt plays.

“Another good kid, but not an NFL quarterback. It took him all day to deliver the ball,” Westhoff wrote. “The whole thing was a disgrace and a mess. I was the only one who kept my end of the bargain.”
