33 consecutive field goals later, Patriots kicker Nick Folk has ‘never been one for records’

Nick Folk set a Patriots franchise record on Sunday.

Nick Folk missed his initial two field goals last fall for the New England Patriots.

The veteran kicker hasn’t missed another since.

Sunday at MetLife Stadium, that gave way to history. Despite missing an extra point, Folk set the franchise record with 33 consecutive field goals after converting from 46, 49, 32 and 26 yards against his former New York Jets.

“I’ve heard,” Folk told reporters during his postgame press conference, “but that doesn’t matter to me really. I’ve never been one for records.”

The 36-year-old proceeded to thank holder Jake Bailey, long snapper Joe Cardona, special teams coordinator Cam Achord, special teams assistant Joe Houston and head coach Bill Belichick.

“All that credit goes to really Jake and Joe and the line the last two years. Cam, Joe and Bill for believing in me, so that all goes to them,” Folk said. “I’m just lucky enough to score points. That’s it.”

Doing so saw Folk pass Patriots all-time scoring leader Stephen Gostkowski in his streak. Adam Vinatieri set the NFL record with 44 while a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

“Two great kickers, legendary kickers,” added Folk. “I’m just lucky enough to get to follow them. As far as being in the same conversation, like I said, it doesn’t necessarily matter to me. I’m just happy we got the win today. I’d like to get a lot more wins, so if we have to win 2-0 or 3-0 or score a bunch of extra points, I don’t care either way. I just want to win, so that’s all I’m about.

Previously, Folk’s longest streak came in 2013 as a Jet, when 23 field goals in a row went through the uprights.

The 2007 Pro Bowler made 92.9 percent of his field goals and 90.9 percent of his extra points last season with New England, twice earning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors and twice hitting game-winners from 50-plus yards.

The Patriots utilized Folk’s second elevation from the practice squad leading up to Sunday’s 25-6 win in East Rutherford.
