The NY Jets and Giants meet for the 15th time

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ—The New York Jets are on a mission. And the only way they can continue with that mission is by knocking off the New York Giants in Week 8.

It’ll be the latest iteration of the MetLife Stadium Bowl this Sunday, as the Giants seek to snap a two-game losing streak to their AFL brothers.

This one will be broadcast on CBS, which makes sense considering the Jets are the official road team.

Andrew Catalon, Tiki Barber, and Matt Ryan will be on the call for the second time this season for a Jets game (the Jets’ win over the Denver Broncos marked the first occasion).

In terms of clothing, the green NFL team will wear their all-white uniforms again.

Jets at Giants history

• The Giants lead the all-time series 8-6

Interestingly, the Jets have won the last two meetings.

In November 2019, the then-Adam Gase-led Jets defeated the Giants in a high-scoring affair (34-27) that featured Jamal Adams ripping the ball out of Daniel Jones’s hands. Before that, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Todd Bowles helped the Jets defeat the Giants in overtime, 23-20, back in 2015.

The last Giants win in the series was, of course, the dreaded Victor Cruz game. On Christmas Eve 2011, Cruz’s 99-yard dash to the end zone sparked a Giants’ 29-14 victory.

• Over/Under: 35.5 (O: -110, U: -110)

For the first time in a long time, the Jets are favored. At FanDuel Sportsbook, Zach Wilson’s team is a three-point road favorite (-110).

The over-under point total may be incredibly low at 35.5, but it makes complete sense, considering the two offenses involved.

The New York Jets at New York Giants Week 8 injury report brings about solid news for Robert Saleh’s squad.

• Michael Carter II (CB): Hamstring (Questionable)
• Randall Cobb (WR): Shoulder (Questionable)
• Will McDonald (EDGE): Back (Questionable)

The good news is that the Jets will get Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed back (concussion protocol), but the bad news is Joe Tippmann’s impending absence.

New York Giants

• Andrew Thomas (OT): Hamstring (Doubtful)

The Giants’ side of the injury report doesn’t look as solid as the Jets’ report. Quarterback Daniel Jones will miss yet another game, whereas it also appears as though Andrew Thomas will as well.

Jets’ keys to victory

Offense: Countering the blitz

For the Jets offense, it’ll come down to Zach Wilson and the unit countering the mad blitzing of Wink Martindale.

The Giants’ defensive coordinator has blitzed well over 60% of the plays in some games, and I’d be stunned if he doesn’t take that tact with Wilson.

Expect early running back and wide receiver screens from the Jets, as well as a plethora of three-step drops.

Defense: Be careful of the garbage

Sure, the Jets’ front four can have a day against the Giants’ inconsistent offensive line. But they’ll still have to take care of business against Saquon Barkley and the rushing attack.

And with that, ensuring that Brian Daboll doesn’t get the better of them with some of the misdirection stuff that hurts the Jets—counters, draws, misdirections, etc.—will be essential.

• New York Jets 27, New York Giants 16

Although the Giants have seemingly written a ship a bit, the Jets are entirely more talented. From top to bottom, the Jets squad is loaded with much more talent than their big brothers.

As long as there’s no bye-week hangover, and as long as Robert Saleh has his guys ready, the Jets should win by two scores.
