Good morning, Gang Green Nation! July 15th is just four days away now, and Marcus Maye remains without an extension. If the Jets and Maye fail to get a deal done in the next four days, Maye will play the 2021 NFL season under the franchise tag and the two sides will not be able to negotiate further until after the end of the 2021 season. I expect that is what will happen. I also expect Maye will not be with the Jets in 2022. By the start of the 2022 season Maye will be 29.5 years old. That is likely too old for a long term extension, and I think it is unlikely the Jets place the franchise tag on Maye again in 2022, as $13 million is a hefty amount for a player the Jets say they view as a strong safety. We’ll see how this plays out. Perhaps the two sides will hammer out an agreement in the next few days. But I suspect Maye fans might be well advised to enjoy the 2021 season, as it might be the last season we see Maye in a Jets uniform.
