New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has released a statement in the wake of a bicycle accident that has left passing game coordinator Greg Knapp in critical condition.

According to Knapp’s agent Jeff Sperbeck, speaking to Mike Klis of KUSA, the coach has been hospitalized after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.

“Greg is such an amazing individual it is hard to imagine the challenge facing him and his family,” Saleh’s statement reads. “Greg’s fun nature, kind disposition, and wealth of knowledge (have) allowed him to make genuine connections with all of our coaches, players, and staff since he has been here. I ask that you keep him in your prayers as we all pull for him to recover from this horrific accident.”

Knapp’s family has released a statement as well, likewise shared by the Jets. He is married to Charlotte, with whom he has three daughters (Jordan, Natalie, and Camille).

“Greg is an amazing father and husband whose passion for life can be felt in all his interactions with people,” the family’s statement reads. “He is our rock and biggest supporter, pushing us to all strive to better ourselves each day with constant love and inspiration. While many know him for his achievements as a coach, his impact as a father and husband is far greater. We are so fortunate to have him in our lives.”

“We are sincerely thankful to all those who have continued to reach out and provide support – it has meant the world to us. We ask that you continue to pray for Greg and our family during this time.”

Knapp has been involved in NFL coaching since 1997, taking only the 2017 season off in that span. He spent the last three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, his second stint with the team after previously serving as the offensive coordinator (2004-06). Knapp has also been the offensive boss in San Francisco (2001-03), Oakland (2007-08, 2012), and Seattle (2009).

Prior to coaching, Knapp set several passing records as a quarterback at Sacramento State and later attended training camps in Kansas City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Under Knapp’s more recent watches, Peyton Manning posted the best numbers of his career during the 2013 season, as he tallied 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns. Knapp was also a part of Denver’s triumphant Super Bowl 50 squad and later guided seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian to respectable numbers in his first season as a starter (18 touchdowns, 3,401 yards) during the 2016 campaign.

Over the last three seasons, aging Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan led the league in passing yardage (13,971) under Knapp’s leadership.

Jets X-Factor bestows its thoughts and prayers to the Jets, Knapp, and his family.
