New York Jets sign WR Mike Williams to one-year deal (Report)

The New York Jets have their No. 2 receiver

The New York Jets have made their splash at wide receiver with the signing of Mike Williams. Heading into the offseason, one of the Jets’ biggest needs was a legitimate threat opposite of Garrett Wilson. Joe Douglas chose not to sign or trade for one in the first week of free agency but may have gotten the best of the bunch.

The 29-year-old wide receiver joins the Jets following seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. During his time there, Williams accumulated 309 receptions, 4806 yards, and 31 touchdowns across 88 career games. His contract with the Jets is an one-year deal worth up to $15 million.

Williams had a slow start to his career after being selected seventh overall in the 2017 NFL draft. However, he broke onto the scene in his third season with over 1,000 yards and a ridiculous 20.4 yards per reception.

From 2019 to 2023, Williams averaged at least 50 yards per game and exceeded 1,000 yards twice. Notably, he increased his receptions per game from 3.27 to 6.33 over that stretch. While his personal statistics are impressive, his fit opposite of Garrett Wilson is the icing on the cake.

Williams is one of the premier deep threats and contested catch specialists in the NFL. The Jets needed someone to win 50/50 balls after struggling in this area last year. Meanwhile, his ability to stretch the field will also create opportunities for Wilson who can play outside and in the slot.

When on the field, Williams is a legitimate top wide receiver in the NFL. The issue, however, is keeping him on it.

Williams has missed at least one game every season except once in 2018 and is coming off a torn ACL. His ACL injury occurred in Week 3 so he should be ready for 2024. The question is if he will be the same player. Despite frequently being on the injury report, Williams played at least 13 games in five of the last six years.

In the end, it’s a great move for Joe Douglas and the New York Jets. They add one of the better wide receivers in the NFL to give quarterback Aaron Rodgers two quality targets. Health is a concern, especially given his recent ACL tear. However, the Jets needed a splash, and Williams gives them that.
