The NFL announced on Monday that NFL Network would carry a record 23 live preseason games. There will be a quadruple-header Week 1 and 2, with two triple-headers for Week 3 of the preseason.

The 49ers second preseason game on Sunday, August 22, will be aired as part of a doubleheader, when the Los Angeles Chargers host the Niners at 4:30 p.m. PT. This should be a fun week as San Francisco will be in southern California all week as they’ll hold joint practices with the Chargers. Those practices should be far more entertaining than the actual game.

It remains to be seen whether Week 2 will be the new dress rehearsal game since there are only three games now. Then again, the joint practice and all of the work the two teams get during the week could cause both coaches to pull the starters sooner than expected. Time will tell.

The following Sunday, on August 29, the Niners will play the second game of a triple-header when they host the Las Vegas Raiders at 1:00 p.m. PT. This’ll serve as the final preseason game, which means we can expect players fighting for roster spots to play the majority of the game.

We’re so close to football coming back.
