The GM and AGM answer questions from the media
The NFL draft is a week away, and this is the next step in the Washington Commanders first season under new GM Adam Peters. He answered questions from reporters today, alongside his new assistant GM Lance Newmark. Peters has made big changes to the roster, signing 22 new players and trading away last year’s starting QB, Sam Howell.
The Washington Commanders have 6 picks in the top 100 of this year’s draft, including the #2 overall pick. They are expected to take a QB in the first round, most likely at #2 after the Chicago Bears select QB Caleb Williams. Peters reportedly had around 20 players in for Top 30 visits, including four of the top QB prospects. Most people expect Washington’s decision to come down to UNC’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

Adam Peters and Lance Newmark are addressing the media. Peters started off by shouting out every staff member in football ops. A reminder of collaborative approach Peters wants to prop up and that several people besides Peters and Quinn contribute to deciding on the No. 2 pick

A nice touch by Commanders’ GM Adam Peters to begin his pre-draft press conference by shouting out every scout by name for their hard work leading up to next week.
Those guys get very little attention and love. He knows because he was one. Classy move.

Adam Peters opened his pre-draft presser thanking literally every person in the meeting, including the team’s executive chef, Connor McGuire. “We’re going to do way better than that D+, I guarantee you that.”

Peters: it’s a big deal to have six picks in the top 100 of the draft. Really opportunity to build and there’s a chance to make the football team better

The pick at #2 overall:
Adam Peters says “we’re real close” to making a QB decision but that he’s a process guy and will run all the way through to next week pic.twitter.com/MjvO2e4xaM

Settle on QB – “We’re real close to making decision. Still more steps in the process. We have to debrief on 30 visits, tonight have medical meeting. DQ and I will huddle up and make a decision next week. Don’t feel rushed but good idea next week.” – Peters #Commanders
— Sherree Burruss (@SherreeBurruss) April 18, 2024
Adam Peters on the QB choice: “We’re real close… still a few more things in the process… We don’t need to make a decision until we need to make a decision; there’s no rush with that. We’ll probably have a good idea what we’re doing early next week.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) April 18, 2024
Peters said decision on No. 2 pick will be made next week. Still going over medical and other news.

Nine draft picks:
9 picks now and the philosophy on more to get it right – “it’s people evaluating people. I [Peters] have great confidence we go 9/9 and there is a chance we miss on one. More swings and fortunate to have that.”
— Sherree Burruss (@SherreeBurruss) April 18, 2024
Trading up/down:
Peters said they’re going to make the best decisions for the football team with their picks. That includes moving up and moving back in the draft. He feels like they have the ability to do both with the number of picks they have
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) April 18, 2024
Top 30 group visits:
Peters on 4 QBs in at same time: “What’s cool is we got to see them all together in a group setting. They all got a lot of time individually with coaches & with us. They were staggered coming in, too. It was a great blend of that & working everyone together in a fun environment.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) April 18, 2024
Lance Newmark on the top-30s: “You see how guys are in a group and you see how they are all individually. I came away impressed by the process.”
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) April 18, 2024
On bringing in the quarterbacks together, Peters said they all know each other, but they all got a lot of time together individually with their potential assistant coaches
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) April 18, 2024
Newmark said he was able to see who players are in a group and individually when a large group of prospects came to the facility earlier this week

Pressure of getting the #2 pick right:
Asked about the pressure of getting the No. 2 pick right, Adam Peters joked, “Do we look stressed?” Then said: “There is a lot of pressure; it’s a great responsibility.” Said he wants to get it right for the region, the fan base, players etc.
— John Keim (@john_keim) April 18, 2024
Adam Peters on feeling the heat to get the No. 2 pick right:
“There’s a lot of pressure. It’s a great responsibility. We take this very seriously, that’s we’ve been working tirelessly. [There is] pressure. That’s what we signed up for.” Wants to nail pick for the staff; city.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) April 18, 2024
Leadership:
Adam Peters talked about how important leadership is at the QB position. Same thing he said about head coach, which proved quite true.
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) April 18, 2024
When it comes to QB qualities….
Peters – One thing we aren’t talking about that is tangible on the field is leadership.
Newmark – core trait is work ethic, tremendous inner belief in themselves, ability to unify people and create a common belief. #Commanders— Sherree Burruss (@SherreeBurruss) April 18, 2024
QB evaluations:
Peters on QB evaluations: “it’s hard. It’s really hard….You probably learn more from the bad experiences than the good experiences but you learn from all of them….It’s a lot easier to evaluate a defensive end than a QB because there’s so many things that go into it.”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) April 18, 2024
Why is QB evaluation hard? Try to learn from past. 20+ years of experience, good and bad. Learn a bit more from bad than good but try to bank it all and make a better decision next time. Harder to eval a QB bc more then just what you see on tape, variables #Commanders

Scouting QBs with the 49ers last year:
Adam Peters on if he had a favorite QB to watch this college season before he got the GM job:
“Before I took this job, we weren’t really scouting top-of-the-draft QBs really hard. In our job, you have to really prioritize your time.. Spending a ton of time on the first-round…
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) April 18, 2024
Trading down from the #2 pick:
Adam Peters: “We feel great about staying at No. 2. I don’t see a whole lot of scenarios where we trade down.”
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) April 18, 2024
Josh Harris’s involvement:
Adam Peters on Josh Harris’s involvement ahead of the draft: “He’s been extremely supportive. If we’ve needed something, he’s been there to provide for us. But I’d say that’s the extent of it. … He’s been awesome about letting us do what we do.”
