My guy @mattbarrows also informed us of this 49ers’ Day 3 tradition that Peters will roll out tomorrow with a new name; Commanders Caucus. https://t.co/8M7jqCiG0u pic.twitter.com/v7OYtw1VAh

Part of the Peters’ approach to drafting includes targeting team captains.
Three of the five Day 2 picks were team captains:
DT Johnny Newton
CB Mike Sainristil
OT Brandon Coleman https://t.co/8M7jqCiG0u— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) April 27, 2024
Johnny Newton
Adam Peters said they couldn’t believe DT Johnny Newton was still on the board at 36. They even tried trading up. No need, as it turns out.
Said the pocket collapser “arrives violently.”

Daron Payne, Jon Allen AND Johnny Newton.
Commanders go BPA and add an absolute dog within the trenches with alignment versatility.
Hell of an add for Dan Quinn’s defense.

Newest Commanders DT Johnny Newton said he’s “fully healed” after undergoing surgery to repair a Jones fracture in January.

“When he’s on a hot streak…there is not a play that goes by where you don’t feel his effect on the interior.”
Both @DianteLeeFB and I were awestruck by Johnny Newton’s ability to take over games. Discussed on the pod:

The @Commanders are just gonna have 3 ballers at DT. But three guys that are athletic enough to be on the field all at the same time. Johnny Newton is strong as hell. Gets off blocks really well has unusual bend as a pass rusher for a 304lb man. Gotta play the eagles twice a yr!
— Chris Simms (@CSimmsQB) April 26, 2024
Commanders aren’t worrying about needs and simply taking good football players, which is what you do when establishing the foundation of a roster under a new regime.
Jer’Zhan Newton and Mike Sainristil are ballers.

Favorite Mike Sainristil moment is an obvious one but easily an all-time top 5 Michigan football play for me. Who knows what happens if OSU scores a TD there at home with 7 mins left (Mikey said nah and they don’t score again…) pic.twitter.com/XMTC7K1HUK

Joel Klatt on NFLN talking about Mike Sainristil: “This guy is going to turn into one of those players that every quarterback is going to have nightmares about because of his instincts and his ability to make plays on the football.”

Mike Sainristil said Jayden Daniels already texted him. Sainristil said they built a friendship in the pre-draft process.

It’s crazy to me that only 3 TEs have been drafted so far. Crazier that Ja’Tavion Sanders wasn’t one of them. He’ll be a steal tomorrow.
WSH took TE Ben Sinnott before the draft industry expected. I’m glad they found a TE they liked to invest in. Desperately needed help there.

Ben Sinnot says he met with COmmanders multiple times: ‘This was an organization I was really hoping to get drafted by….I’m really excited.”

Ben Sinnott went from being a ZERO star recruit and walk-on to an all around receiving threat for @KStateFB. He will line up all over the formation in Kliff Kingsburry’s offense and the @Commanders just got themselves the perfect compliment to Zach Ertz. pic.twitter.com/K8ONjELxrm

Ben Sinnott was drafted in round 2 pick 53 in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 9.73 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 33 out of 1199 TE from 1987 to 2024. https://t.co/pHPbq2TlBW pic.twitter.com/jYvgn2QFCj

Washington started with their most draft capital in the last 25 years
here’s what they’ve done with it so far:

Rd 2: DT Jer’Zhan Newton

Brandon Coleman
Brandon Coleman’s career pass-blocking stats:

One of my guys in this class that I would love to bet on at the end of day two and especially early day three is Brandon Coleman. As most know by now, the 2022 tape was better than 2023, but at his best there are shades of Cordy Glenn.

Brandon Coleman was drafted in round 3 pick 67 in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 9.96 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 7 out of 1583 OG from 1987 to 2024. https://t.co/cltQWcTuGI pic.twitter.com/F8RGD9DJtS

RD 3 | PK 67 – Commanders: Brandon Coleman IOL, TCU
With the 67th overall pick , the @Commanders shore up their pass protection unit which allowed the 4th-highest pressure rate in 2023 (39.5%).
Coleman earned the 2nd-highest athleticism score (97) among IOL in this class.… pic.twitter.com/L8BrNJmw3C
— Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) April 27, 2024
Think about it this way, Brandon Coleman is 6’4”, has 35” long arms & a 35” vertical. That means he can almost touch the TOP OF AN NBA BACKBOARD … oh by the way he weighs 313 lbs. The more I let this pick settle in, the more I like it, the elite athleticism plays a big part https://t.co/ERTC6em3mF
— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) April 27, 2024
Very important distinction: Many draft sites refer to Brandon Coleman as a guard but the Commanders appear to be referring to him as a tackle.
22 of his 26 starts over the last two years came at left tackle. I’d imagine he’ll get a chance to compete with Lucas and others.
— Grant Paulsen (@granthpaulsen) April 27, 2024
Peters says Washington believes Brandon Coleman has “everything it takes to be a tackle in this league”

Luke McCaffrey

Couldn’t be more proud of my brother @mccaffrey_luke. What a story. Bet on yourself every step of the way. What a story #NFLdraft

RD 3 | PK 100 – Commanders: Luke McCaffrey WR, Rice
With the final pick of Day 2, the @Commanders add McCaffrey to their receiving corps, who ran the 2nd-quickest short shuttle (4.02) of any wide receiver at the Combine since 2018.#NFLDraft | #RaiseHail pic.twitter.com/pv4CoOOTrQ
— Next Gen Stats (@NextGenStats) April 27, 2024
It’s no coincidence Jayden Daniels is the best box fade thrower in the draft and the #Commanders drafted Luke McCaffrey who has a 60.7% contested catch rate (17 contested catches, 2nd most). Another example of helping out guys based on their strengths. #RaiseHail
— Nick Kerns (@nicktkerns) April 27, 2024
Luke McCaffrey was a converted QB who really flashed last season and tied Rome Odunze with 22 contested catches last season — as @MelKiperESPN noted. https://t.co/3Ou14PFTDo

Rice’s Luke McCaffrey is prime example why NFL scouts (and @seniorbowl) watch junior tape in offseason.
No receiver in this year’s class made bigger jump over past year than @mccaffrey_luke.

The Commanders gets Luke McCaffrey on Zoom after Adam Peters’ press conference. They knew each other already, of course, so Adam stayed to say hello.
Several “dude” mentions flowed both ways.

Luke McCaffrey 927 career rushing yards (6 yards per carry). Sacks deflating that average.

Not saying Rice WR Luke McCaffrey is going to put up fantasy numbers like Puka Nacua did last year – no receiver in history of league has – but McCaffrey has as close to Puka’s nuanced QB-friendly game as anyone in this loaded WR class.
Went back and watched Puka’s BYU tape… pic.twitter.com/5FThHU4PFo

The night started with the Johnny Newton pick and ended with WR Luke McCaffrey.
Adam Peters cooked tonight and the NFL pundits are impressed.
