BTB Discussion: If T’Vondre Sweat falls to Day 3 in the draft, should the Cowboys try and get him?

There are a lot of questions about a certain defensive tackle in this year’s draft class.

Texas Longhorns defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat has been connected to the Dallas Cowboys throughout the draft process. Understandably so, as Sweat would fill an immediate need on the interior of the defensive line. The Cowboys lost defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins in free agency when he chose to sign with the Seattle Seahawks. This left a wide hole in their interior line, cutting even deeper into their Achilles heel on defense. The Cowboys have struggled to defend the run, especially in the second half of their last few seasons.

From a player perspective, Sweat seems like a match made in heaven for the Cowboys defensive line. He is 6’4” and weighs 366 pounds and is the brother of Philadelphia Eagles DE Josh Sweat. The Texas native was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2023, as well as winning the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior defensive lineman.

With all this said, Sweat’s character concerns and recent legal issue could lead to him falling in the draft, possibly as far as a Day 3 pick. On April 7th, Sweat was arrested in Austin, Texas on a DWI charge. According to Texas laws, a DWI is a Class B misdemeanor and could carry a jail term of up to 180 days and a fine of up to $2,000. According to one report, Sweat’s BAC level was more than 25% over the legal limit when he was pulled over.

According to Marcus Mosher, Sweat has also been described as a “party animal” and “class clown”.

Sweat certainly has talent and fills a need that the Cowboys have on their defensive line. With 2023 first-round pick Mazi Smith having an underwhelming rookie season, it could be valuable for the team to take another interior defensive lineman in the 2024 draft.

The other issue here is the Cowboys lack of a fourth-round pick even if he does fall that far. They may have to do some trade maneuvering to get in position to take him.
