Calvin Munson aims to take advantage of his second opportunity with the Patriots

Calvin Munson sat in front of a camera at Gillette Stadium on Friday to answer questions from reporters. It was probably one of the least stressful moments he has had over the previous 48 hours.

The 26-year-old, after all, was just signed to the New England Patriots’ active roster off the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad just two day ago. Joining the Patriots is not a new experience for Munson — he already spent 14 months with the organization between October 2018 and December 2019 — but he still has some catching up to do.

“They’ve been exciting,” he said about the last two days. “Lot of catching up. Just trying to see what my role’s going to be and just do the best I can.”

After entering the league as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2017, and then moving on to the Patriots, Munson spent two years with the Dolphins — including all of the 2021 season up until Wednesday on the team’s practice squad. Now, he has gotten another chance to prove himself as a member of a 53-man roster; the Patriots had an opening in their linebacker room after losing Harvey Langi to a sprained MCL.

As a consequence of those circumstances, Munson is now back in Foxborough. And he’s bringing some experience with him.

“Just being here before, I kind of know how things work; how the schedule is; how practices are; how hard they work,” he said. “Being here before then coming back, I have a better idea of what is going to be going down.”

As for the role he is going to play, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was rather vague during his Friday press conference. While he did mention the possibility of Munson filling Langi’s shoes as a reserve linebacker and core special teamer, he went the classic “we have to see how it goes” route when speaking about the team’s latest addition.

Still, Belichick did give some insight into the apparently rather straight-forward reason why his team opted to bring Munson back into the fold.

“We wanted to work with him before,” he said. “He had an opportunity to be on our roster and get games that would give him a year of vesting and so forth, so I understand that. We’ve dealt with that before. We wanted to work with him before. It was a situation kind of in reverse where he was on our roster, and he wasn’t on a roster. From a career standpoint, there are some advantages to that.”

Munson himself also does not yet know (or at least not say publicly) what the Patriots have in mind for him. However, he knows what his goal is going to be: make the most out of the chance he has been given.

“I’m not really sure [about the role]. I got the call, I’m just coming out here,” he said. “I’m trying to do the best I can and whatever opportunities come my way I’m just trying to take advantage of them.”
