The NFC East might not be very good yet again. The Dallas Cowboys have let it be known they plan to win the race.

The Cowboys were 1-1 in two close road games coming back to Texas for their home opener. The Eagles were 1-1 too. The teams were not equal on Monday night.

The Cowboys blasted the Eagles. Dallas won 41-21, and that was after a garbage-time Philadelphia touchdown cut the Cowboys’ lead. It was an absolute blowout.

Now the Cowboys are 2-1, with Washington and Philadelphia tied at 1-2 and the Giants at 0-3. The division is far from over but Dallas is the only team that has shown any life.

Cowboys start fast, finish well

The Cowboys came out strong. It was evident right away they were the better team.

Dallas got a long pass to CeeDee Lamb to set up a 1-yard touchdown from Ezekiel Elliott. Then Jalen Hurts threw an interception. The Eagles defense scored on a weird fumble recovery in the end zone by Fletcher Cox, but that barely slowed the Cowboys down. Even Prescott being stuffed on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line didn’t matter. The Eagles were never really in the game.

The Cowboys led 20-7 at halftime and if the Eagles were going to make a game of it, that hope died when Hurts threw to his left, receiver DeVonta Smith fell down and Trevon Diggs had an easy pick-six. That made the score 27-7 shortly into the second half.

The Eagles gave the Cowboys some nervous moments in the third quarter, but with 11:26 left in the fourth Prescott scrambled and hit Cedrick Wilson in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-goal for a touchdown that made the score 34-13 and put the game away.

Dak Prescott enjoyed his first game in almost a year in front of a home crowd.

Prescott threw for three touchdowns in his first home game since the injury, Trevon Diggs returned an interception 59 yards for a score and the Cowboys beat the Eagles 41-21 on Monday night.

“Just thankful for everything that I’ve been through, all of the hard work that made me account for just to be back out here doing what I love,” Prescott said. “It’s the greatest place to play football.”

Ezekiel Elliott ran for a season-high 95 yards and two touchdowns, and tight end Dalton Schultz had the first two-TD game of his career.

Except for a fumble in the end zone that gave the Eagles (1-2) their first touchdown, Prescott was efficient, going 21 of 26 for 238 yards without an interception in the first NFC East game for both teams.

Prescott’s first game at AT&T Stadium since the season-ending compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5 last year against the New York Giants was also the return to full capacity after the pandemic-imposed limits last season. There were 93,267 fans inside with the retractable roof open at the $1.2 billion facility.

“A guy like Dak, he’s going to be psyched regardless,” Elliott said. “There’s not any extra he can get besides just the competitor he is, the player he is.”

Good things are happening for the NFC East favorites.

NFC East looks winnable

After three weeks, the Cowboys are in sole possession of first place in the NFC East. It’s early. You can’t really say the Cowboys are going to run away with things, but it’s apparent as we head into October that the Cowboys are the best team in the division with a quality victory over the LA Chargers in Week 2, an impressive showing in the season-opening loss to Tampa Bay and a convincing victory over the Eagles on Monday night. This three-game homestand features two divisional games. The Cowboys have already beaten the Eagles, and in two weeks they face the winless New York Giants.

Elliott-Pollard a solid 1-2 punch

The Cowboys continued their 1-2 punch of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. When the game was over, the pair combined for 155 yards 28 carries and two touchdowns. Elliott took over the running attack gaining 95 yards on 17 carries with the two first-half touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 21 yards. When the Cowboys were putting the game away, it was Elliott taking over, just like old times. Elliott didn’t need 20 to 25 carries to make an impact, either. The Cowboys offensive line was pretty dominant giving him running lanes to take control. There was a stretch where both runners took over a series to keep both players fresh.

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has not exactly endeared himself to the fanbase over one season into his tenure with the team. One of the reasons for this is due to his decision-making skills. But for football fans, they simply can not get over McCarthy’s clock management, or lack thereof.

After the Eagles failed to convert on a third-and-24 play following a 19-yard catch by running back Miles Sanders, the Cowboys seemingly had an opportunity to receive the ball and to put more points on the board. Instead, McCarthy let the clock dwindle down all the way down to 22-seconds when the Eagles finally let off the punt.

Prescott then kneeled the ball down to end the half with the Cowboys leading 20-7.

Opinions about Zeke are all over the place.

Acho adamantly believes Pollard should start ahead of Zeke.

“Zeke Elliott is a star. A superstar, $90 million. He’s also not the best running back on the Cowboys,” Acho told me. ”But because you’re paying him, a superstar, $90 million, you gotta’ play him.

“Since Tony Pollard came into the league, he’s fifth in the NFL in yards per carry. Zeke is 31st. This season, [entering Week 3] Pollard is first, and Zeke is 29th.

“You can look at the running back situation and see the issues with the Cowboys. The dollars don’t make sense. Pun intended.”

From beginning to end, Acho makes valid points. The dollars seldom add up to winning with the Cowboys. That’s not new.

And, on this issue, Acho is wrong.

Zeke may never live up to that six-year, $90 million contract extension he signed in the fall of 2019. He won’t.

It also does not mean Tony Pollard should start.

Hark back to the words of former Dallas Cowboys head coach, and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Bill Parcells on this issue.

It was Bill who said there are certain players whose effectiveness have a limit. In this case, he was referring to one of his running backs, Julius Jones, back in 2006.
