Cowboys news: Dak Prescott limited, other players return to practice after absences

The Cowboys star quarterback was able to practice some, but his status is still unsure heading into the Vikings game.

During the portion of Wednesday’s practice that was open to the media, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott showed no ill effects from a right calf strain suffered Oct. 17 that has put his availability for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in some question.

Prescott went through an extended warm-up prior to practice and did not take part in the individual footwork drills with the rest of the quarterbacks, but he went through simulated drops off to the side while coach Mike McCarthy watched. Later, he threw passes to his running backs, receivers and tight ends without any issues.

Prescott was officially listed as limited during Wednesday’s practice but CeeDee Lamb said Prescott looked, “regular. Same Dak. He looks great in and out of his drops. I don’t know the restrictions on him or what’s going on, but, to me, he looks perfectly fine.”

The team also got some veterans, and one rookie, back in the fold on Wednesday.

Some important additions to practice include Michael Gallup. He has opened the three-week window on practicing before he needs to be activated. It’s unknown at this point when he will be able to play.

Trysten Hill was also back at practice for the first time since his ACL injury in the fifth game of the 2020 season.

Other additions to the Cowboys practice routine were rookie cornerback Kelvin Joseph and reserve tight end Sean McKeon.

La’el Collins was back at practice, but obviously not coming off of injury. Instead it was a five-game suspension. As noted earlier, he’s working at right tackle and left guard.

With the bye week behind us, we are free to return to our regularly scheduled program for Week 8’s Sunday Night Football showdown with the Vikings.

Both teams are coming off bye weeks. The Vikings (3-3) have won two straight, including an overtime road win against the Panthers on Oct. 17. The Cowboys (5-1) have won five in a row since losing the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The game is set for NBC/Ch. 5 KXAS at 7:20 p.m.

The scariest question about the Halloween night game is whether Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will play with his strained right calf. The Cowboys must decide whether sitting him for another week is the smarter move if Prescott is not 100% healthy.

If there’s a chance he could make the injury worse and miss multiple games down the road, it might be a wise move, especially considering the Cowboys’ three-game lead in the NFC East. Cooper Rush would get the start if Prescott isn’t available.

Although the Cowboys’ front office, coach Mike McCarthy and Prescott himself have all remained publicly optimistic about his chances of being ready, we won’t have a good idea until we see how much work, if any, he gets during practice this week.

Jayron Kearse might not have been given many opportunities to shine during his tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, but as he heads back to the stadium he once called home, he’s playing the best football of his career, and looking to make a statement.

But when asked if he was excited about playing the team that drafted him out of Clemons in 2016 and later let him go, he said no and called it just another game. “It’s part of the business,” said Kearse, who recorded seven starts with the Detroit Lions last year. “I am not the first guy this has happened to and I won’t be the last. This is part of the business. … Another team on the schedule. I’m going to put my best foot forward and try to win the game.

“I am focused on playing good football, not anything else.” It’s called growth. Kearse’s newfound focus and maturity are the primary reasons he has excelled with the Cowboys in his sixth season. There were also part of the reasons he didn’t get the same opportunities in his previous stops. “I think I have [grown up],” he said. “My younger career, I didn’t handle a lot of things the way I should have. With the experience and getting older, I understand things a lot more.”

Jerry Jones said recently the Cowboys will remain aggressive at the trade deadline, not content to rest on their 5-1 laurels. As intriguing as that is to hear, you have to wonder not just who they’ll target but how much they’ll be willing to spend to get them.

Kyle Fuller is capable of being a solid cornerback in the league. He hasn’t shown that in 2021, but there are enough highlights on his resume to show he can help a contender.

Fuller was an All-Pro selection in 2018 and followed it up with a Pro Bowl campaign in 2019. This season he’s allowing a passer rating of 116.0 when targeted, but he’s been a player who runs hot and cold throughout his career.

A change of scenery could do him some good, and the Cowboys’ search for a corner to play opposite Trevon Diggs could be aided by bringing in a fresh face.

Cornerback depth is important throughout the stretch run and the playoffs. The Cowboys are one injury away from having to rely on some young players at key positions, including Nahshon Wright, who is a rookie without much polish, and Maurice Canady who has been burned in limited action.

The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine is accepting bids from various cities, and Dallas is one of three finalists.

While the league has been willing to move the Draft, the Combine has always been held in Indianapolis. Putting the Combine on television was another huge step for the league promoting the draft, but the event still exists as a crucial point for teams to gather information on prospects. Fans tuning into Combine coverage see the pristine turf field of the Colts, but Indianapolis has also served well as a host site because of medical facilities and other resources nearby.

The Cowboys have all of these resources at their sprawling 91-acre training facility The Star, and are in consideration along with Los Angeles to be the first location outside Indy to host a Combine. SoFi Stadium has welcomed in fans in Los Angeles for the first time this season, and reviews have been stunning for the new home of the Chargers and Rams since 2020. It will be the host site for the 2022 Super Bowl.

The 2023 Combine would further cement LA’s status as a new hub for football, though the Cowboys have already hosted a Super Bowl in their new stadium as they try to put The Star in the spotlight next.
