It won’t happen, but it would be sort of funny if it did

We know that the Minnesota Vikings have an issue at the quarterback position as things stand right now. We also have a pretty strong suspicion that they’re going to attempt to solve that issue in next Thursday’s 2024 NFL Draft. And while we don’t highlight a lot of individual mock drafts here, there’s one that has a solution that’s so crazy it might almost be worth exploring.

Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus has put together a two-round mock draft, and it starts off the way a lot of mocks have for the Vikings thus far with them selecting North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye after a significantly smaller trade-up. The team moves to #9 overall to select Maye in this scenario.

There were reports that Drake Maye is the quarterback the Minnesota Vikings covet, and that lines up nicely for them if he starts to slide as more and more concerns crop up with his game. In this scenario, Minnesota jumps up only two spots to ensure they get their guy and ward off teams behind them looking to jump in front.

The Vikings then trade out of their second first-round pick at #23, sending it to the New England Patriots for a second-round pick, #34 overall, and a third-round pick, #68 overall. Doesn’t sound too crazy-go-nuts so far, right?

The crazy part is what happens when the Vikings come back up at #34, the second pick of the second round. Monson has them going with a quarterback again, this time in the form of Michael Penix Jr. of Washington.

General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has a finance background, which means diversifying and hedging. Minnesota shocks the NFL by selecting quarterbacks in the first and second.

Now, I want to be absolutely clear here. There’s not a snowball’s chance in Miami that the Vikings draft quarterbacks in the first and the second round. Nor should they. I mean, I get that we as fans want the quarterback problem to be solved but with as many other issues as this team has I don’t think using your first two picks in a draft class on quarterbacks is the way to go about it.

Sure, the reactions on social media would be absolutely incredible to watch and would be fun for a while, but after that wore off I don’t think anyone that cheers for this team would be a big fan of it.

Still, it’s nice to see something like this that goes a little bit away from the conventional. And, hey, if the Vikings couldn’t solve their long-term quarterback issues with two premium prospects at the position, they might never solve it at all.

We’re almost through mock draft season, folks. Thank goodness for that.
