Player Overview

Qwan’tez Stiggers has the most interesting path to the pros in this year’s draft class. He could possibly be one of the few players in the common draft era drafted without college experience. His collegiate journey was marred by unfortunate circumstances (Lane College: canceled season due to COVID) and tragedy (passing of his father). In 2022, he played for the Fan Controlled Football 7-on-7 indoor league where he totaled 5 interceptions. He chose to play for the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts over the XFL where he replicated the same production over 16 games, earning 2023 CFL Outstanding Rookie of the Year. He stood out as a Shrine Bowl participant. His pro day was attended by 29 teams, including the Washington Commanders.

Qwan’tez Stiggers is a well-built defensive back with good physical traits that compares to the top defensive backs in this draft class. He is capable of playing man and zone coverage and not afraid to get physical. He has shown the ability to mirror receivers with good ball skills. Questions will surround whether the level of competition and unorthodox path is translatable to the next level. Qwan’tez Stiggers projects to be a backup/special teams player at the next level.

Strengths

  • Good ball skills.
  • Able to play in any coverage, excels in man coverage where he stays on his man.
  • Plays good zone coverage, knows how to pick up and move off assignments.
  • Physical tackler.
  • Shows the ability to contest receivers at their hands.

Weaknesses

  • Hard to evaluate skill against drafted peers.
  • Needs to develop route recognition, can be fooled by double moves.
  • Raw footwork.
  • Needs to work on his agility.
  • Over-aggressiveness in man-coverage can lead to penalties.

How Will He Fit On The Team

The latter parts of the draft is the perfect place for taking fliers on possible NFL talent. Even if most don’t make it, hitting one this late does have its rewards. Washington has uniquely benefited from taking Day 3 fliers on secondary players like Darrick Forrest and former Commander Kamren Curl. If Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. are looking for camp bodies who might have a shot at making the roster, Qwan’tez Stiggers is an option. He’s shown translatable traits like mirroring receivers and contesting passes at the hands, while showing the ability to create turnovers. Even if Stiggers starts the year on the practice squad, he is possibly worth the investment on physical traits alone.
