Team owner makes his first statement since Gruden’s resignation in the wake of offensive emails and racist trope

UPDATE: GM Mike Mayock will address the media Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. PT.

By saying very little, Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis has said a lot.

In his first public comments since the shocking resignation of head coach Jon Gruden on Monday night because of offensive emails and the use of a racist trope, Davis made brief statement to ESPN about the saga. He told Raiders’ reporter Paul Gutierrez: “I have no comment. Ask the NFL. They have all the answers.”

So far, no one from the Raiders leadership brass has spoken publicly about Gruden’s ouster. From the tone of Davis’ words to ESPN, I wouldn’t expect him to have much to say on the situation anytime soon. Interim head coach Rich Bisaccia is scheduled to address the media on Wednesday afternoon.

From reading between the lines, it seems that Davis feels like the league knows more about the Gruden emails than he does. Davis, though, had been in possession of all of the emails since Friday. Some of them were leaked publicly Friday and then more on Monday. Gruden resigned shortly after the second wave of emails were reported.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported on Tuesday that Davis met with the team’s coaching staff and expressed “frustration” with the Gruden situation.

It is interesting that Davis said Mayock had 51 percent control of the roster decisions and Bisaccia has 49 percent. Usually, interim coaches are simply caretakers for the rest of the season.
