The Las Vegas Raiders have released Henry Ruggs III just a few hours after the wide receiver was involved in a car crash that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman.

The crash left Ruggs injured, and after his release from hospital — he was treated for non-life threatening injuries — he was jailed by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. The 22-year-old was charged with DUI resulting in death.

If convicted, he will have to serve a mandatory prison term in Nevada that could range from anywhere between two and 20 years in jail.

Ruggs was allegedly driving drunk and causing the crash at 3:39 a.m. on Tuesday. His car, according to the police, hit a Toyota RAV4, killing the 23-year-old. The wide receiver’s girlfriend, who was in the car with him, also suffered serious injuries, per the authorities.

The Raiders, meanwhile, did not wait long to make a decision. Just 17 hours after the accident, they released Ruggs. The 12th overall pick in the 2020 draft, Ruggs appeared in 20 games for the organization over the last two years. He caught 50 passes for 921 yards and 4 touchdowns and was Las Vegas’ leader in receiving yards this season.
