It’s no secret that Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel is one of the smartest coaches in the NFL.

Whether he’s outsmarting New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick in a playoff game or identifying and taking advantage of an opposing team’s weakness, it seems like Vrabel is one step ahead more often than not.

One area in particular where he’s shined over the last few seasons has been his decision-making on fourth downs.

The Titans head coach has consistently done a good job of knowing when to be aggressive, making the correct decisions on approximately 62 percent of those play calls since the start of 2021, per Sports Info Solutions.

Vrabel’s cerebral approach has led to him producing the fourth-best expected Win Probability Added (WPA), with a score of -0.7 percent.

The Titans have finished in the top half of the league in fourth-down conversion rates in each of the past two seasons.

In 2021, Tennessee finished eighth, converting 60 percent of its tries, but the Titans did take a step back in 2022, with a 52.94-percent success rate, ranking 14th in the NFL, per Team Rankings.

With what figures to be a much better offense (if healthy), the Titans should be more successful when they go for it in 2023.
