Tracking Washington’s Black Monday moves

The Washington Commanders season has finally ended, and they were the second-worst team in the NFL this season. That dubious distinction also hands them the #2 overall pick in this year’s draft. That’s a great asset for the next administration to work with to rebuild the team, but it was also one more nail in Head Coach Ron Rivera’s coffin.

Rivera was hired on January 1, 2020 when the team was still named the Washington Redskins. Dan Snyder was getting negative publicity, and economic pressure from multiple fronts, and he need a respected figure to step in to take over the team, and take on all of those questions he was never going to answer. Rivera was fired by the Carolina Panthers after losing to the Redskins, and he was quickly made the head football man in Washington. Snyder wanted a coach-centric organizational model, and Rivera was interested in running the show his way.

Four years, and two team names later, Washington won the division and made the playoffs once, and never had a winning record under Rivera. This year’s team had no Pro Bowlers on it, and they lost 8 straight games to finish a miserable season. Rivera’s firing was long overdue, and finally happened yesterday. Managing partner Josh Harris spoke to the media and outlined his plans for the search for a new general manager and head coach to lead this team into the future.

Josh Harris has interviewed five candidates for the new head of football operations position over the last two days at his house in Miami. An announcement is expected soon, and San Francisco 49ers AGM Adam Peters is considered the favorite to get the job. Washington is also conducting a head coaching search, and they have been linked to 8 candidates. One coach that was loosely linked to Washington was Bill Belichick. He is done with the New England Patriots and still wants to coach. Multiple reporters have said Washington has no interest in hiring him, but the speculation will continue until he gets another job, or Washington hires their new coach.

Stay tuned for the latest updates as they happen
