Let’s make a deal

The Washington Football Team has made LB Landon Collins available for trade according to th Athletic’s Ben Standig. The NFL’s trade deadline is 4pm today, so any kind of deal has a very limited window. Collins still has 3 years left on the 6 year, $84 million deal he signed in 2019. He has base salaries of $11.5 million, $12.5 million, and $13.5 million for his final 3 years.

Standig notes that a trade will be challenging if not likely per his sources. The team is reportedly willing to add money to the deal to offset some of Collins salary, similar to the deal Washington got from Miami when they traded for Ereck Flowers this year.

Collins has never really lived up to the hype after signing his big free agent deal, and fans have not been happy with his performance or attitude in Washington. He famously brushed off calls for a switch to linebacker in the offseason. When the team started using him in that role more, and then noted he was better there, he begrudgingly said he would do it to help the team. He still sees himself as a safety, and would prefer to play that position.

Washington dropped to 2-6 after Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. Head Coach Ron Rivera said he would be evaluating everything over the team’s bye week. Something will obviously have to change soon if Rivera’s hope of another late season run is going to happen. This is wishful thinking at this point, and the team should be looking to get what they can now as they look to next year’s draft to continue rebuilding the team.
