Let’s take a look at the roster

All of the talk surrounding the Minnesota Vikings this offseason has involved the quarterback position, but there are plenty of other places the team should have a look at in this year’s NFL Draft as far as filling out the roster is concerned. What positions are those? Well, here are the top five as I see them heading into this weekend’s selection meeting.

1) Defensive line – The Vikings have done a bit to address the linebacking group in free agency this offseason, but the depth chart for the guys in front of them is a bit lacking. Harrison Phillips has been pretty darn good in his two seasons with the Vikings, but the rest of this group is suspect. They could use a big space-eating guy in the middle of the line to keep blockers off of the linebackers and at least occasionally get after the quarterback, which is an area the defensive line was woefully deficient at last season.

2) Interior offensive line – This has been an issue for the Vikings for what seems like forever. They’ve got the tackle spots figured out, obviously, but the interior continues to be problematic. Garrett Bradbury has back issues that are going to continue to plague him for the rest of his career, in all likelihood, and Ed Ingram has been up-and-down in his first two seasons. The team may or may not re-sign Dalton Risner at some point, but even if they do they could use someone to develop at guard and/or center after losing some of their depth pieces in free agency.

3) Wide receiver – Yeah, Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison are great, but the Vikings lost a very good WR3 in K.J. Osborn this offseason. Brandon Powell has the ability to step into that spot right now, but he’s only back on a one-year deal. With as deep as the wide receiver class is in this year’s Draft, the Vikings will almost certainly use a flier on a wide receiver with one of the many Day 3 picks they have. They could even look for someone who could double as a return specialist with the new kickoff rules coming into play.

4) Running back – The Aaron Jones signing was a big one for the Vikings in the wake of last year’s weakness running the ball, but he’s only on a one-year deal. Ty Chandler gave people reasons to be excited to see him as a part of a committee with Jones this year, but the Vikings might want to have someone waiting in the wings for when Jones departs. Jones has been a bit injury-prone, too, so it wouldn’t hurt to have a decent RB3 on the depth chart in the event that happens.

5) Tight end – It isn’t the most screaming weakness on the roster, but the mystery surrounding T.J. Hockenson’s status to start the season makes it difficult to gauge exactly how much help the team needs at this spot. Josh Oliver will need to start showing that he’s worthy of the contract he got last offseason and Johnny Mundt will need to slot into the second spot, but if Hockenson is going to miss half the season. . .and, hopefully, he won’t. . .the team is going to need a decent TE3 sooner rather than later.

That’s what I’ve got at those spots, folks. What do you think the biggest non-QB needs for this roster as as we hit the Draft?
