Why the Dallas Cowboys need to say no to most trade offers before the trade deadline

Based on Jerry Jones comments, it’s possible that moves could be made by the Cowboys front office.

It’s that time of year when teams looking to make a run are in the mood to start wheeling and dealing. The Dallas Cowboys are in a position where they could decide to move on from certain players because they have someone coming back from injury or suspension that can take over, while at the same time bolstering their roster at positions of need. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones alluded to this while talking on 105.3 The Fan.

“Open for business year-round,” Jones said. “… I think we’ve got a unique situation because we’ve got players coming that we’re going to have to have roster spot room for. So, we’re busy.”

Jones would also go on to suggest that the players coming back from injury are their foremost concern when it comes to roster positions. That doesn’t mean the Cowboys couldn’t make a move here or there in order to strengthen the team. There are a lot of football teams around the league whose seasons aren’t going the way they planned and will be looking to unload players in an effort to strengthen their draft position.

So what should the Cowboys do in this situation? It may be smart to do absolutely nothing! Your team is clicking on all cylinders and that is something you can’t mess with. You have a winning streak and growing talk of a possible Super Bowl berth. Obviously if another team is doing a fire sale and you can basically get something for nothing, you need to act. But the team should not be actively looking to move players or make deals, and should hold tight unless an absolute superb deal came their way.

As much as the front office would love to swap a player for a player, you have to take into consideration how long it will take a player to catch up on the playbook and who they will be taking snaps away from once they step on the field. There is also the disruption of losing a player from this tight-knit group that seems to have chemistry.

This Cowboys front office, mainly Stephen Jones and Will McClay, have to make sure that they stay in Jerry Jones ear and remind him that you shouldn’t mess with a good thing. This Cowboys team is finding their groove and showing that despite adversity they are able to hang tough and win with a strong offense and a gritty, opportunistic defense.

What positions could the Cowboys make a move to improve outside of their players returning from injury? They just got safety Donovan Wilson back. The return of right tackle La’el Collins just strengthens the the offensive line and creating depth with Terence Steele. Defensive tackle Neville Gallimore will bring more of a pass rush to the middle of this defensive line. Cornerback Kelvin Joseph brings more depth at cornerback, where Anthony Brown is trending up. At defensive end, DeMarcus Lawrence will boost the Cowboys pass rush. Michael Gallup will make the passing corps even more dangerous.

Unless the Cowboys receive a knockout deal, they shouldn’t be looking to deal just to deal. This team appears to be one of the tighter, more unselfish units the organization has had in a while. The chemistry is working, and reinforcements are coming. There’s no pressing reason to try for a trade.
