No Supplemental Draft for the NFL this offseason

In news that affects. . .well, just about nobody, to be honest. . .the National Football League has declared that, for the second year in a row, there will be no Supplemental Draft.

The Supplemental Draft is generally held to accommodate players that missed the filing deadline for the regular draft or, more frequently, had issues arise that affected their eligibility such as academic or disciplinary issues. It is up to the discretion of the league as to whether or not they have a Supplemental Draft each offseason, and this year they have decided against it.

The Minnesota Vikings have, historically, not worried about the Supplemental Draft, having only ever made one selection in the Supplemental Draft process. That came in 1988 when the team spent a fifth-round pick on South Carolina wide receiver Ryan Bethea. Bethea was a part of the Supplemental Draft after being suspended by the Gamecocks because of a drug arrest. He never played a regular season down for the Vikings.

So, if you were holding your breath waiting to see what the Supplemental Draft would bring this year, you can resume your regular breathing schedule. There won’t be a Supplemental Draft in the National Football League before Training Camp starts next month.
