Notes: How the Detroit Lions used the bye to regroup

Coach Dan Campbell and a few players weighed in on how they spent their time off to calibrate. 

The pressure was on this particular bye week for the Detroit Lions hoping to turn things around.

Veteran Trey Flowers has had his share of bye weeks and knows what this time is for.

“Get some rest physically. Mentally — just kind of restore. Spend time with family. Relaxation … be prepared for the next nine games and go out there and give your best,” he said.

Rookie receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown said he also spent time with family and friends in California. Now back in Detroit, he said he’s working on a new mindset Campbell is asking players to adopt — the next nine games are a brand new season.

“That first half of the season, put it behind us and let’s look at this next half of the season as a new season — a time to improve, be better, pay attention to the details, do all the little things that maybe we didn’t do in the first half of the season,” he said.

As you might imagine, Campbell spent the bye self-scouting. He addressed issues on both sides of the ball, but said he kept coming back to the players that might make up the future of the franchise.

“The hard thing right now is the fact that what happened (against) Philly puts a bad taste in everybody’s mouth,” he said, referencing the 44-6 loss on Oct. 31. “It does ours too but when you do go back and you step back and look at it in its totality, you do see improvement on young players.”

But when asked to reflect on what he has felt over the past few months since coaching the Detroit Lions, he said he’s really not able to. It’s all about the next game.
