Notes: Jared Goff draws on 2018 Super Bowl-bound Rams for bounceback inspiration

This isn’t QB1’s first rodeo with this specific type of adversity.

While some Detroit Lions fans are panicking after Detroit’s brutal loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, quarterback Jared Goff most certainly is not. He’s been here before.

Just shortly after the 38-6 beatdown at M&T Bank Stadium, Goff remained as poised as ever talking to reporters. He was asked if a game like this was an opportunity to allow the team to re-focus. This reminded him of a time when his 2018 Super Bowl-bound Los Angeles Rams were just pummeled in every aspect of the game.

“We played at Chicago — great defense. We got kicked in the teeth. It wasn’t as big of a score as this,” Goff said. “They got after us, we had nothing going on on offense, I didn’t have my best game. Then we came back and won the next few, and went on our run in the playoffs. So yeah, (refocusing) can certainly be the case if you handle it the right way and I expect us to.”

In early December of 2018, the 11-1 Rams lost to the Bears to the tune of 15-6 on Sunday night football. I went looking for insight into the general vibe of the game and found this excerpt from The BearsWire:

“There was something magical about that chilly Sunday night at Soldier Field, where the Bears defense grounded the NFL’s most impressive offense. The defense forced Jared Goff into a career-high four interceptions and sacked him three times,” wrote USA Today’s Alyssa Barbieri.

I don’t think Goff would describe the evening as magical.

“By that point, (Sean McVay), who called the loss to Chicago ‘humbling’ that night, was forced to adjust an offense that had otherwise been largely unstoppable in Los Angeles’ previous 28 regular season games,” wrote therams.com’s Stu Jackson.

Humbling is a word being used quite a bit in the hours following the Lions’ loss to the Ravens. So yeah, Goff has been here before. He’s been on a team that endured an embarrassing loss while under the highest of expectations. He knows that if a team is good enough and uses the loss as a chance to center themselves, it could be a small bump on the road to the Super Bowl.

Lamar Jackson and the Ravens were at their best. The Lions played their worst game of the season.”
