Notes: ‘Women in Football’ series highlights female roles on the Lions

In leadership and administration, Detroit draws on the full talent pool.

The Detroit Lions are one of a small number of teams with a female primary team owner, but did you know there are many female executives and professionals throughout the ranks of the organization? In partnership with sponsor Priority Health, the team has a regular series this season highlighting the critical roles women play all over the organizational chart. Last week, the first episode of the “Women in Football” series featuring Vice President of the Detroit Lions Foundation and Community Relations Jen McCollum was posted to the team’s YouTube channel. A member of the culture task force, McCollum is right up there helping to set the tone for the organization.

On Friday, the second episode featuring Assistant to Player Personnel and Football Administration Liz Laux was posted:

Laux, who assists Brad Holmes and Mike Disner, is very much in the thick of things when it comes to the team building going on in Detroit right now. It is a very cool behind-the-scenes account from someone who literally helps bring new football talent to Detroit (free agents and prospects working out for the team).

It is a great way to spotlight the contributions of women in the Lions organization along the lines of what the league is doing with their Next Woman Up series on the NFL site. We look forward to seeing more of these in the future.

• The Lions Cheerleaders were featured on WDIV Local 4’s Fitness Friday segment with Rhonda Walker.

• Justin Rogers at the Detroit News wrote about how Lions wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle-El “can’t help but wonder what might have been if” he’d come out of college and entered the modern NFL as a dual-threat quarterback.

• Not really relevant for the Lions this season, but of general football interest:

• Comerica Bank is running a contest to name Detroit’s biggest sports fan. The prize package includes season tickets to your favorite Detroit team even if it is not the Lions.
