Don’t expect to see the New York Giants’ biggest stars against the New York Jets

The New York Giants are taking a different approach to their preseason opener than the crosstown rival New York Jets.

While the Jets are planning to give their starters a little bit of run – head coach Robert Saleh said that starting quarterback Zach Wilson will play “about a quarter, a couple of series” – the Giants are using this game to evaluate the depth of the roster.

Head coach Joe Judge says that he plans to treat this game as teams typically used to treat the fourth preseason game, which historically featured little-to-no action for starters.

“I will say this, the priority for me is to treat this more like a traditional game four and when I say that, it’s more of a make sure all of the players that we really have to evaluate get an evaluation.

“Because of the rules this year, we have to cut five guys after the Jets game. I want to make sure that we don’t make any decisions that impact our or their future without a proper evaluation,” Judge said.

Quarterback Daniel Jones, running back Saquan Barkley, wide receiver Kenny Golladay, wide receiver Kadarius Toney, and linebacker Lorenzo Carter are all confirmed to be sitting out, and more names could join them as the game nears.

Mike Glennon will start at quarterback in place of Jones.

Glennon is a big reason that Wilson is a Jet. He struggled over five late-season starts for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, leading them to an 0-5 record. His struggles helped secure the No. 1 overall pick and the rights to Trevor Lawrence for the Jaguars, leaving the Jets in the second slot to take Wilson.

New York Jets injury updates

The Jets will be without first-round pick Alijah Vera-Tucker, who is dealing with a pec injury. He is on a “day-to-day” status, according to Saleh.

There have not been any new updates on second-round pick Elijah Moore, who left practice on Thursday with a quad injury.

Quinnen Williams (Active/PUP) will miss the game as he continues recovering from foot surgery but is expected to return to practice next week.

Vinny Curry (Active/NFI) and Ashtyn Davis (Active/PUP) remain sidelined and are expected to return around Week 2 of the regular season. Kyle Phillips (Active/PUP), Parker Ferguson (Reserve/Injured), Saquan Hampton (Reserve/PUP), and Alex Lewis (Exempt) are all unavailable.
