The New York Jets’ official social media called out the NFL for snubbing Breece Hall

The 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award finalists were announced on Thursday afternoon.

There was only one problem – New York Jets star Breece Hall was not among them.

Making the list over Hall were Joe Flacco, Damar Hamlin, Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, and Tua Tagovailoa.

The announcement drew the attention of the Jets’ social media team, who responded with a short answer on Twitter.

From an objective standpoint, it is insane that Hall did not qualify as a finalist for the award. The Iowa State product was ready for Week 1 less than a year after his ACL injury and ran for over 100 yards on his first two carries of the game.

Hall continued to dominate in both the running and passing games, racking up 1,585 yards from scrimmage. That number was fourth-best in the NFL, an incredible accomplishment considering his prior injury.

Additionally, Hall averaged 3.43 yards after contact per attempt, ranking fourth-best out of all running backs with 150 rushing attempts. He also had the highest breakaway percentage (the percentage of a player’s yards that came on 15+ yard carries) out of all qualified running backs at 40.5%.

Most importantly for the Jets, Hall was the engine of their offense for large parts of the season. Without his contributions in both phases, the Jets would not have won close to as many games as they did in 2023.

This was most evident in the season finale against the Patriots. Hall had 190 yards from scrimmage, willing the Jets to a win by outgaining the entire Patriots offense by himself.

There are some great finalists for the CPOY award in 2023. Damar Hamlin’s inclusion needs no explanation, and Matthew Stafford’s bounce-back is definitely consideration-worthy. Even Joe Flacco, who helped the Browns immensely down the stretch, can have an argument made in his favor.

But Baker Mayfield and Tua Tagovailoa’s do not have a case to be nominated over Hall. Their seasons would fall into the “Most Improved” category, not the award for which they are currently nominated.

By all accounts, Hall had a remarkable season, and it is made that much better when one realizes he did it after a catastrophic injury.

To keep him off of the Comeback Player of the Year finalist list is not only a snub, but flies in the face of what the award is supposed to be.
