New York Jets clear cap space with new C.J. Mosley contract

The New York Jets agreed to a reworked two-year contract with linebacker C.J. Mosley.

The new contract is worth $17.25 million, less than what he would’ve made this year alone, with $13.25 million guaranteed. The Jets keep the leader of their defense through 2025 and lower his cap hit.

Mosley was set to have a cap hit of $21.5 million in 2024 and two void years with cap hits of $6 million and $3 million in 2025 and 2026 respectively. Mosley’s new deal replaces his old one and drops his cap hit in 2024 by approximately $12 million. This move puts the Jets around $24.75 million in cap space.

Mosley joined the Jets on a lucrative five-year, $85 million contract back in 2019. Unfortunately, fans wouldn’t see much of him until 2021. An injury in Week 1 of the 2019 season would cause him to miss all but two games that year. Mosley would subsequently opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19. However, Mosley quickly reminded fans of his impact when he returned to the field in 2021.

In the three years since returning, Mosley has only missed one game while racking up over 150 total tackles and 50 defensive stops each season. Since 2021, Mosley is third in the NFL with 283 solo tackles.

Mosley’s impact goes beyond his individual stats. He is the leader of a Jets defense that has been among the best in the NFL for the last two years. His experience and intelligence allow him to diagnose the play and get the defense in the best position to be successful. Jets linebacker Quincy Williams has credited Mosley for his development from a waiver claim in 2021 to first-team All-Pro in 2023.

It’s a smart move by general manager Joe Douglas and the Jets. They keep their defensive leader in place while clearing more cap space to improve the team.
