Corey Davis is seeking a comeback after retiring last offseason

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, former New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis is applying for reinstatement to the NFL. Davis retired last summer before the start of the 2023 season.

Yates also said that the Jets are expected to release Davis from the Reserve/Retired list today, but could return to New York on a new deal.

Before his abrupt retirement, Davis was one of the Jets’ key contributors at wide receiver.

Signing with the Jets in 2021, Davis was a reliable target down the field and over the middle of the field, even with plenty of struggles around him. In 22 games with the Jets, Davis caught 66 passes for 1,028 yards and six touchdowns.

Additionally, Davis was a plus blocker for the team in the run game, helping the team’s running backs find more space along the edges.

Davis returning to the Jets would be a great development for their offense. He would provide some stability alongside Garrett Wilson and allow the team to be more flexible in their pursuit of upgrading the roster.

After adding Davis, New York would likely only need one more receiver to round out the unit, allowing them to take a big swing in the trade market or the draft. Additionally, it could allow the Jets to ensure their offensive line is completely fortified.

Davis will likely explore other options, and his return to the Jets is not guaranteed. But if the team is able to retain him, Davis would be a welcome addition at a position of need.
