Zach Wilson did exactly what he was supposed to against the Giants

The first preseason game of a brand-spanking-new regime is officially in the books. Sure, the New York Jets will gladly take the 12-7 victory over the New York Giants, but the final score has very little to do with the actual substantive outcome of the content.

How Zach Wilson handled his first-ever NFL game, how Robert Saleh led the sideline in his first game as the big boss of a squad, and how Joe Douglas‘s new team looked from a depth and potential standpoint is what last Saturday night remains all about.

Fans were eager to see plenty of Jets, of course, but the new face of the franchise was the main attraction.

With negative reports coming from camp—fairly or unfairly—fans were eager to see if Wilson could shut the critics up. Was he able to do so? How would his transition from BYU to the NFL look in his first game against live-action?

Other big Jets names, young defensive line shines

How did the other bigger names perform in the only drive or two the first team was out on the field? Players such as C.J. Mosley (a man who hasn’t played in nearly two years), Carl Lawson, Mekhi Becton, Corey Davis and many more were on the minds of fans who watched from home or at MetLife Stadium—something that hadn’t happened since the 2019 NFL season.

Moreover, the lower-end depth chart position battles were interesting while watching along. One of these spots is cornerback, of course, not only as it concerns the No. 2 man across from Bryce Hall but as it relates to depth as well.

Another battle worth analyzing is the defensive line, as plenty of talented players continue fighting to make the roster. And after breaking down the film, it’s become even more obvious that this spot is stacked. How did players such as Jabari Zuniga, Bryce Huff and Hamilcar Rashed Jr. play against the Giants?

Fans were also glued to see how Denzel Mims would play, as he’s currently in the midst of one of the more controversial camps in recent memory. Is Mims a future starter on this team, or is he destined to be a bottom-of-the-roster player?

All of this plus much more is broken down and analyzed on the latest edition of Blewett’s Blitz (full breakdown at the top of this page).
