New York Jets players aren’t sure what to say anymore

The New York Jets’ offense is not functioning right now, and players are scrambling for answers.

After Friday’s blowout loss to Miami, multiple players spoke about the offensive struggles that plagued the Jets for yet another week.

Quarterback Tim Boyle gave a lengthy assessment of the unit’s performance when asked about the offense.

“I think we shot ourselves in the foot too many times. I think a couple of false starts put us behind the sticks. A couple of things that I missed,” said Boyle.

“I missed that ball to Ruck (Jeremy Ruckert). I think my first incompletion there to Ruck was right over his head. I think that would’ve been a huge gain. I missed a couple of run-alert things. But I feel like I was seeing it well.”

Tight end Tyler Conklin said, “As an offense, I don’t think we were much closer.”

Running back Breece Hall also spoke about the Jets’ struggles against Miami on offense.

“I couldn’t tell you. I feel like right now, I’m just trying to make a play. It’s been hard for me to get an open space and get some good looks. It’s a lot of guys pressing and stuff right now. Just trying to press and make a play every time you get a ball, and that’s not good because it causes little mistakes like, I’ve been making mistakes I never made in my career. So, it’s frustrating,” said Hall.

“Just trying to find a way to get better every week and trying to stay positive and just being one of the best players on offense,” Hall said. “I’m trying to step into that leadership role, which is hard for me because I’ve always been a guy who just did my job. It’s been difficult, but I love our guys. Our guys come to work every day. We’re just not getting the results we want.”

There is no simple fix for the Jets’ issues on the offensive side of the ball. Despite multiple personnel changes throughout the season, the Jets cannot find a spark to get their unit moving in the right direction.

Blame for the struggles on the field can be directly linked to decisions made off of them. The decision to hire Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator, while seemingly necessary to bring in Aaron Rodgers, has resulted in poor and predictable play-calling.

The misses on offensive free agents (such as Dalvin Cook, Allen Lazard, and Mecole Hardman) and the failure to add a true backup quarterback fall on Joe Douglas. The lack of discipline and reluctance to make personnel changes earlier in the season falls on Robert Saleh.

Until there are wholesale additions to the unit and changes to the offensive staff, the Jets offense does not seem like it is going to improve anytime soon.

Considering those changes will have to come in the offseason, there does not look to be much hope for the Jets’ offense to improve, meaning more offensive struggles are likely on the horizon.
