The New York Jets’ 2020 first-round selection agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday

A former New York Jets first-round selection is moving to the NFC.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, offensive tackle Mekhi Becton is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. The deal is for one year and worth up to $5.5 million.

Becton’s tenure in New York got off to a great start in 2020. He showed massive potential as a run blocker, creating highlight reel plays by leveling defenders in the open field. He also showed pass-blocking upside, stone-walling players like Joey Bosa and Justin Houston in some games.

However, injuries, off-field controversy, and inconsistent play soon mired that initial promise.

Becton could not stay on the field in 2021 or 2022, suffering two major knee injuries. He played one game in 2021 and zero games in 2022.

Additionally, the Jets seemed to take issue with Becton’s conditioning before 2023. Whether it was Robert Saleh or Mike LaFluer, the organization constantly took subtle shots at the left tackle’s work ethic.

While Becton did stay healthy in 2023, starting 16 games, it was evident that he was not the same player that he was as a rookie. Becton struggled massively in pass protection, specifically against edge rushers with speed. He also lacked the same power in the running game.

Becton now has an opportunity to regain his footing under renowned offensive line guru Jeff Stoutland. Likely serving as the team’s swing tackle, he has a chance to develop as a player.

The Jets also are in a good spot with their offensive tackles, adding Olu Fashanu, Tyron Smith, and Morgan Moses in the offseason.

Becton and the Jets may not have found their desired success together, but both sides now have an opportunity to succeed away from each other.
