Did breaking the Patriots losing streak mean something to the New York Jets?

The drought is over for the New York Jets. Well, at least one of them.

Concluding their 2023 season against the New England Patriots on Sunday, the Jets finally defeated their arch-rival by a score of 17-3. It marked the first time New York has beaten New England since 2015 and the first win in regulation since 2010.

To put that in perspective, players such as Garrett Wilson, Sauce Gardner, and Breece Hall were barely in high school the last time New York defeated New England, and they were not even in middle school the last time it happened in regulation.

Furthermore, the Jets ended a 12-game losing streak at Gillette Stadium and an 11-game losing streak on the road against AFC East teams.

After the game, head coach Robert Saleh gave his thoughts about breaking the streak.

“Credit to them. You’ve got to do something pretty special to be able to have a winning streak like that. Again, like I said, starting 2024 was the most important thing for us, starting it strong with a win, and that was a really good effort from the team today.”

Tight end Tyler Conklin said the win “meant a lot for everybody” and spoke about what it meant to break the streak.

“Next year, we don’t have to go around hearing about that s-t because, at the end of the day, it is going to weigh on you. You’re going to go into the game and hear about it again…now we don’t have to do that, and it feels really good.”

Regardless of the draft pick ramifications, it is positive for the human element of the team to get the proverbial weight off their shoulder.

Beating New England is something the Jets repeatedly have failed at under this regime, so a win against them, no matter the circumstances, can be significant.

New York must now look toward the offseason and start building a roster capable of contending. With the burden of the Patriots’ streak off their back, all focus must be on breaking the longest playoff drought in North American sports.
