Despite the team’s offensive struggles, the Jets still plan to stick with Zach Wilson for the remainder of this season

There does not seem to be a quarterback change on the horizon for the New York Jets.

According to a new report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the team plans to keep Zach Wilson as their starting quarterback this season.

“The New York Jets are not planning to bench QB Zach Wilson, barring a disaster, a Jets source shared,” said Russini.

“Though there has been pressure mounting for weeks that the Jets need to make a change at the position to give the offense some life, the belief among team decision-makers is that Wilson still has the most upside of their quarterbacks. Their goal remains to make the playoffs and hope Aaron Rodgers is ready to return.”

The Jets sticking with Wilson is not surprising at this point of the year.

With Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian as the only other options, the Jets may see Wilson’s raw ability and the continuity he brings as their best option at signal caller.

Yet, the Jets did not have to be in this position. It was questionable for the Jets to head into the 2023 season with Wilson as the backup, especially considering head coach Robert Saleh said he needed a “reset” ahead of this past offseason.

Wilson’s standing became more relevant when Aaron Rodgers, the team’s major offseason addition, tore his Achilles four plays into the season. Even with the Jets rallying to beat Buffalo in Week 1, the quarterback position was a significant question.

Zach Wilson had little time to develop as a passer in what was supposed to be a red-shirt year for him. In addition, the BYU product dealt with injury issues in his first two seasons, a significant problem considering the third-string quarterback was Tim Boyle. It seemed like it was only a matter of time before the Jets made an addition.

The Jets opted to stand pat, though. They did not try to trade for Joshua Dobbs, who won the first game he started for the Minnesota Vikings after only costing them a sixth-round pick.

Jacoby Brissett, who threw for over 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns in 11 games last season for the Cleveland Browns, was not pursued by the team either.

The only move they opted to make was signing Siemian to the practice squad. However, his addition has not played a meaningful role for the Jets this season, as the team has yet to elevate him from the practice squad.

Wilson is not the only issue with the offense, as the team’s skill positions, offensive line, and play-calling have also been poor.

Quarterback, though, is the one issue that presented some options. While they may not have been solutions, these additions would have raised the floor of the Jets’ offense at a minimum.

As a result, general manager Joe Douglas deciding not to add to the quarterback room and stick with Wilson will have a massive impact on the remainder of the Jets’ season.

Whether it brings a positive or negative outcome remains to be seen. But regardless of what happens, a large portion of the ultimate result will fall at the feet of the Jets’ main decision-maker.
