New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson shows up for a brief moment in EA Sports’ first official trailer for the anticipated ‘Madden NFL 22.”

Ian Roddy

As any avid NFL fan knows, the offseason doesn’t mean we’re completely devoid of football until September.

There is plenty of excitement that goes on from the conclusion of the Super Bowl until Week 1 that football fans can count on each year. Those obvious timeline checkpoints or occurrences are free agency, the draft, trades, training camp, HBO’s Hard Knocks, the NFL’s top 100 players videos, etc.

On Thursday, yet another yearly checkpoint was crossed as we progress through the 2021 offseason. EA Sports released the reveal trailer for the next installment of their wildly popular Madden NFL video game franchise, Madden NFL 22.

Let’s get the disappointing news out for New York Jets fans.

The total screen time devoted to anything having to do with the Jets is a grand total of … about half a second.

In a “blink and you’ll miss it” moment, new franchise quarterback Zach Wilson can briefly be seen with his back to the camera.

The trailer flashes rapidly from quick shots of Kyler Murray, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, to Wilson for a split-second before cutting to Tua Tagovailoa.

Since Gang Green finished 2020 with an abysmal record of 2-14, it’s hard to find much reason for EA to feature much screen time for the Jets. Sure, the team looks to be on the definite up-and-up, but until they prove something on the field, they’re considered among the league’s worst.

But a lack of attention from EA is something the Jets are used to. The popular video game franchise has snubbed the Jets in its ads and marketing for as long as it’s been around.

In fact, the only Jets Madden cover athlete ever was Brett Favre on the cover of Madden ‘09, released in August of 2008. This hardly counts anyway, as Favre was originally pictured on the cover in his Green Bay Packers uniform.

It was only after he was traded to the Jets five days prior to the game’s release, that EA offered an alternative cover with Favre in Gotham green.

Jets X-Factor

The Madden 22 cover will feature Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes, both of whom have graced the game’s cover in the past. Brady and Mahomes have more than earned the attention they receive, though.

As Jets fans, we can only hope that Zach Wilson can elevate himself from a half-second frame in a reveal trailer to an eventual Madden cover athlete.
